MONTEREY COUNTY POPS! and ACCESS MEDIA PRODUCTIONS (AMP) LAUNCH NEW TV SERIES – “POPS! PROS TEACH”
Monterey County Pops! and Access Media Productions (AMP) announce the debut of a new locally produced TV series – “Monterey County Pops! Pros Teach”.
This series of eight half-hour musical instrument clinics taught by MC Pops! principal players will air on Comcast channel 24 (AMP 1) every Friday at 4:30 p.m. beginning on Friday, November 13, 2020, as part of AMP’s PORTS programming targeted at the K-12 audience.
This series was produced by MCP! Vice President, Doug Lee, and directed by MCP! Music Director, Dr. Carl Christensen. The programs were filmed and edited in the AMP studios in Monterey by AMP’s technical staff and are part of MCP!’s commitment to support school music programs during the pandemic.
This unique collaboration is believed to be the first of its kind on the Central Coast.
This initial series of programs concentrates on wind and percussion instruments. The MCP! musicians presenting the clinics all hold degrees in music performance and music education and have many years of experience performing professionally and teaching.
The following instruments are included: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trombone, percussion/timpani, tuba, horn, and trumpet. The sessions focus on broad, general techniques of playing each instrument – equipment choices, position, breathing, tone quality, articulation, and intonation. The history and traditions of each instrument are also covered.
Music lovers of all ages will enjoy the series. The presenters were encouraged to be creative and the styles vary with each class. In the clarinet session, the many types of clarinets are demonstrated, the horn teacher demonstrates the early horn without valves, the saxophone class includes jazz improvisation, and the percussion lesson covers a huge array of percussion instruments.
The programs can also be viewed on MCP!’s web site montereycountypops.org where print materials referenced in the video are available for download.
