Marian Concus

Flute

Monterey County Pops is the first ensemble for which Marian Concus has been required to wear a white hat. Another first was when Wheaton Municipal Band determined that Ms. Concus’ 5’1” height was insufficient for her to be seen while playing the Chaminade Concertino for Flute and Symphonic Band. The band therefore required her to stand on top of a big wooden box during her Chaminade performance. Ms. Concus’ height was not an issue while performing Takemitsu Toward the Sea on alto flute with Fremont Symphony and Siboleth Basadeh on recorder with Santa Cruz Symphony.

Ms. Concus’ large, black, orchestral wardrobe has been used during her tenure with Santa Cruz Symphony, Bay Philharmonic, and Boise Philharmonic. For her off stage Banda Piccoloist position with Central City Opera, Ms. Concus was thrilled to be allowed to wear anything she pleased.

On the cover picture of Maxwell Street Klezmer Band’s recording Maxwell Street Days, Marian Concus is wearing her grandmother’s early twentieth century dress. The packaging of her recordings with Laudamus Choir, Thy Will and Forever I Will Sing; Windy City Slickers; Ohlone Choir; and Adama have no pictures of her.

Marian Concus holds a degree in Flute Performance from New England Conservatory. She also studied for two years in Michel Debost’s Master Class in Paris, France and at University of California, Berkeley.
