2019 Memorial Day Concert – “To Remember and Honor”

Part of the Monterey County Pops! 34th Annual Free Memorial Day Weekend Concerts.
Sunday at NPS and Monday at Colton Hall.
Monterey County Pops! Music Director, Dr. Carl Christensen will conduct. The Monterey Peninsula Gospel Community Choir, Johnny Nash, director, will entertain at 1:00 p.m. on the City Hall Lawn.

The Monterey City Hall Lawn performance (2 p.m.) will present a program of pops, patriotic, and Americana favorites. Featured soloists include Blue Grass fiddler, Laura Burian; the young musicians of Orchestra in the Schools; Soprano, Stephanie Hulsey; and the Monterey County Pops!/Palenke Arts Youth Chorus conducted by Juan Sánchez.

Soprano, Stephanie Hulsey, will sing America (My Country ‘Tis of Thee), America the Beautiful, and God Bless America.

Blue Grass fiddler, Laura Burian, will perform a medley of American fiddle tunes as well as the haunting Ashokan Farewell, from the Ken Burns Civil War documentary
The varied musical program will include original band music by English composer, Gustav Holst, the rock classic Bohemian Rhapsody by Freddie Mercury, and Horn Players Holiday by Leroy Anderson featuring the four french horn players of Monterey County Pops!

The Palenke Arts Youth Chorus will perform accompanied by the Monterey County Pops! orchestra playing special arrangements written by Dr. Christensen especially for this concert.
The concert will include the Presidential Suite, music of John Williams from the movies Saving Private Ryan, The Patriot, and Lincoln, as arranged by Monterey County Pops! trumpeter and Carmel Bach Festival Director of Marketing and Communications, Scott Seward.
Monterey County Pops! will be joined by 40 young musicians from ORCHESTRA IN THE SCHOOLS in a performance of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy.
Further patriotic selections include National Emblem March, High School Cadets March, The National Anthem, The Armed Forces Salute, The Navy Hymn, Taps, and Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever.
Will there be a concert on Memorial Day 2020?
Yes! We expect to have two Memorial Day performances again: One at the Naval Postgraduate School and one in Monterey. We will start to announce the 2020 concerts in January.
