Veterans Day Concert

Saturday, November 9, 2013 (7:00pm) at Robert Stanton Theater, King City

2013 vet day 1The Monterey County Pops! is pleased to announce its first appearance in South Monterey County.  The program, titled The Robert and Virginia Stanton Memorial Concert to Salute Our Veterans, will feature the 15-member, fully professional Brass & Percussion Ensemble of the Pops performing in the historic Robert Stanton Theater in King City on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.  The program will be conducted and hosted by Pops Music Director, Dr. Carl Christensen.
 
The admission free concert will focus on pops, patriotic, and Americana themes.  Titles to be performed include "You're a Grand Old Flag", "Yankee Doodle Dandy", "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", and the spiritual "Down By the Riverside."
 
The concert will open with the presentation of the colors by a

military color guard followed by the National Anthem.  Service veterans will be honored by the playing of the musical themes of each branch of the armed forces.
 
The Pops will share the stage with students from the YOSAL-King City program in the performance of the "Can Can" and the "Bohemian Stomp." 
 
The program will also include circus marches by Karl King, the Mexican classic, Canción Mixteca, the stirring Grand March from Verdi's Aida, and classics by Henry Mancini.
 
The performance will conclude with the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" during which the Pops will be joined by the Timshel Choir of King City, directed by Anthony Toohey.
 
This and other free Pops performances are made possible by generous donations, sponsorships, and foundation grants.

Monterey County Pops! is pleased to announce the first performance of it's 17-piece Jazz Band on Labor Day, September 2, 2013, 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the Payton Garden Stage at the Monterey County Fair.  The Jazz Band, led by MCP! Music Director, Dr. Carl Christensen, will be joined by popular local vocalist, Sandy Clickard.  With this premier performance, Monterey County Pops! continues to demonstrate its versatility in presenting free, professional concerts to Monterey County residents and visitors.
 
The Jazz Band features the MCP! brass, reed, and percussion sections.  The fully professional ensemble of 5 saxophones, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, piano, bass, drums, and guitar will perform classic Jazz, Swing, Latin, Fusion and Blues favorites. 
 
Among the featured composers are Dave Brubeck, Tito Puente, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, and Fats Waller.  The program will include hits by Blood Sweat and Tears, Weather Report, and the Count Basie Orchestra.  Featured titles include special big band arrangements of "Summertime", "Blue Suede Shoes", "In the Mood", "New York, New York", "Oye Como Va", "La Bamba", and "Birdland."

The 15-member Brass/Percussion Section of Monterey County Pops! will present a free public performance at Spreckels Memorial Park on July 4th from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.  The public is also invited to hear the ensemble rehearse from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.  This will be the third consecutive year that the group has performed at the Spreckels 4th of July Celebration presented by the Spreckels Volunteer Fire Company
 
The powerful ensemble of trumpets, french horns, trombones, euphonium, tuba, percussion and timpani conducted by Music Director, Dr. Carl Christensen, will present a patriotic program that includes a salute to the US Armed Forces, the "Fanfare for the Common Man" of Aaron Copland, and John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever."  Other selections will include "Easy Winners Rag" of Scott Joplin, "String of Pearls", "In the Mood", and the "Triumphal March" from Verdi's Aida.

Jacks Ball Park Monterey (7:00pm, gates open at 5:00)

Monterey County Pops! is pleased to invite the public to a FREE FOURTH OF JULY FAMILY CONCERT at Jacks Ball Field in downtown Monterey on July 4, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.
 
The gates will open at 5:00.  The concession stand will be open and all are invited to listen to the "Pops" rehearse.
 
The concert will feature the stirring sounds of the Monterey County Pops! WIND ORCHESTRA, a 41-member, fully professional ensemble of woodwinds, brass, and percussion that will be joined by special guest soloists including local Italian Tenor, Erasmo Aiello and Stephanie Hulsey.
 
The program will feature the first local performance of "A New Birth of Freedom", a narrative setting of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address with narrator Nancy Selfridge, Vice-Mayor of Monterey. 
 
The program will include "American Pageant", a medley of patriotic songs that has been performed at every presidential inauguration since 1969. 
 
Also featured will be the first-ever Pops performance of "Video Games Live", a suite of musical themes from "Halo", "Civilization IV", and "Kingdom Hearts."
 
The concert will conclude with tradition Independence Day favorites including John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" and the "1812 Overture" by Tchaikovsky.

Memorial Day Concert

The Naval Postgraduate School is not able to host their annual Memorial Day Open House and Concert this year due to the Federal Government sequester.  The Montery County Pops and NPS both plan to continue this great annual tradition in 2014.
